the greening

i too love jezebel -
her fine ships and way with words,
and her lovely blog.

today i'm loving the greening of things
the rhododendrons are unfathomably fantastic this year
and i'm daydreaming about some of these special spots.

wish you were here for a dinner in the garden under twinkly white lights.

summer soba

your es-ness,

love the lash necklace!
i've been wanting to wear false eyelashes as a new daily regime
but may just settle on wearing this one around my neck.

and great drawings from the unknown 'soon to be known' hipster.

it's a holiday here in the good old US of A
and i am recovering from a crazy paella party we had here last night.
so delicious that i had some more for breakfast with a poached egg on top.

and as the weather heats up i thought you might like to try this
soba salad perhaps with a little added poached chicken or fish.

i would like to make it wearing one of these aprons from daiso
but it seems they only sell in multiples?
might have to go to my little japanese dollar store to find.

hope you are enjoying the sunshine and fresh air of bancouber.

sayonara for now.

stephanie simek

i was debating a dress,
when i happened upon this stephanie simek necklace for you.

and if my camera was cooperating,
there'd be a picture of lovely sorrel sauce
with poached salmon and new potatoes too -
spring has sprung, and god bless the trout lake farmer's market.

unknown hipster

hello again

last night i discovered the fine drawings of the unknown hipster.
they remind me a little of maira kalman,
and a lot of jean-philippe delhomme
(actually, they must be one and the same).

found via garance dore

makes me want some new clothes
and then to paint my wardrobe

variations on a theme

ms jow

here's more on my ongoing folded sphere obsession,
this one from daiso
(and of course starting here:)

i have a parallel dishtowel obsession,
and have been searching searching for a wholesale supplier
for natural linen dishtowels.
not as easy as all that.

the sun is out,
the wisteria is in bloom.
happy friday.

tea towels

i hear there is sunshine and flowers up your way.

the light coming through your windows will even make your new lamp
more beautiful and if you don't install it right away,
the packaging itself is cool enough to hang somewhere.

tea towels always remind me of you and there is a wide variety of
them here crafted with all sorts of creative designs.

i also like the whimsical drawings of this artist emma magenta and this plate.
dancing does help no?
(bringing back fond memories of you dancing on carrol street post nightclub outing)

miss you and kiss you much.

ooooh, shoe love
do share your thrifted footwear, and i'll do the same

in the meantime
here's a treasure from the united church flea market last weekend
a lavender (!) danish pendant lamp

does that ever sound like a pastry

chloe's booty

had a quick look at her blog and noticed the wee style rookie hung
with the Rodarte girls while she was here in LA
and they of course made a trip to opening ceremony.

thought if you had an extra $625 bucks kicking around you might want
to order a pair of these as OC is having an exclusive presale till May 20.

as for me i am trying to start wearing all those
lovely vintage shoes we buy when we are out thrifting together
that just seem to sit in my closet.
will post some photos soon.

look forward to seeing your vegetable garden.

style rookie

i am more than a little jealous of your weekend -
mine was spent house sitting, and when we got there, NO INTERNET.
sometimes this is a good thing, but not this time.
(at least it made the vegetable garden a priority...)

had wanted to share style rookie with you
(they get younger and younger, eh?)

off to check email etc

much love and happiness to you!

woodblock class

Master Shodo uses my block to teach about applying the ink

our groups finished woodblock prints.

one of master shodo's pieces at the show.

on saturday i took a japanese woodblock workshop
given by a japanese zen buddhist monk and very talented artist, Shodo Iwagaki.
we based our designs on a circle, square and triangle which are the 3 shapes
which represent the universe in buddhist teachings.
was nice and very therapeutic sitting there carving wood next to this lovely man.
his show is on at tortoise gallery here in venice.
it took him 2 days to carve the text for his woodblock invite.

hope you had a nice weekend and there was no snow.
we had a 5.0 earthquake here last night and as i lay in bed reading
it felt like gigantic hands shook house. crazy.

prints and things

sounds like you are happy to be back in brooklyn!

many, many years ago my friend keyo had that very same luggage set.
what's more, she had the same flowers in some kind of vintage mac tac (sp?),
and completely covered her tiny '70s 90cc vespa in black and white flowers.

later she lived on an abandoned flower farm on hawaii, then squatted in a shack on bowen island for a few winters (without water or electricity), then lived in jimi hendrix's old house in strathcona.
last i heard she was cooking for oil drillers up in the arctic somewhere.
true story.

Here are some flowers to brighten you day, from the talented claire nereim.

love to you

idea paint

thought this might interest you as a variation on the chalkboard paint wall.
this new product transforms any smooth surface into a dry erase board which is perfect for jotting and scribbling all those many genius ideas that you have running through your head or just a place for cy to get his picasso on.

where are you these days? miss you.

a new york minute

we put out an old broken fridge when we got here and it was immediately tagged by UFO

had wine with the beautiful eva who skates next weekend in the roller derby
it's the brooklyn bombshells vs. manhattan mayhem
(she skates for the bombshells)

we had dinner at moto and this music act and especially her voice transported you back into the 1930's...truly magical. that's broadway street in the background with the JMZ tracks above her head. i had my usual chicken dijonaise with mashed potatoes and seghesio zinfandel.

saw this fabulous set of samsonite luggage at the brooklyn flea.
there were actually 7 pieces in all for the asking price of $300.
i was tempted but they're just not functional enough ie: too heavy

more soon. o x j b i r d

happy mama's day

darling sarah,

i hope your day is filled with sunshine + smiles
+ delicious treats.

this made me smile yesterday as i cut through a park in chinatown and
just a minute before i took this they were all cracking up with laughter
about one of their hands of cards

and this made me smile just now ( thanks harry )

This video was made in the Antwerp, Belgium Central (Train) Station on March 23, 2009, with no warning to the passengers passing through the station. At 8:00 am a recording of Julie Andrews singing 'Do, Re, Mi' begins to play on the public address system.

As the bemused passengers watch in amazement, some 200 dancers begin to appear from the crowd and station entrances.

They created this amazing stunt with just two rehearsals!

tea a drink with jam and bread...
you get 'Mother of the Year' award from me by the way

and i am sorry to hear about your house in santa barbara.
i just heard about the fires there yesterday.

safe in brooklyn + sending love,
mama jow

Saturday, May 9, 2009

i learned today that my childhood home in santa barbara burnt to the ground in the jesusita fires.
such a terrible tragedy for so many,
especially after the recent tea fires that did so much damage to nearby montecito.
thankfully, no lives were lost.

glad we are well and safe.
love to you

i love the weber paella -
there are some great recipes in the moro cookbook,
which i hauled up to savary with a big bag of bomba rice last year
so i could paella with fresh clams and prawns plucked off the beach
(well, the prawns aren't plucked off the sand exactly, but you get the idea...)

15 minutes of andy

have just landed in nyc for a week to catch up with
a few things here at the house and get myself an art hit of some kind.
any suggestions?
saw these watches today and of course they reminded me of you
and your love for andy's illustrations.
not sure if cell phones have put watches on the road to obscurity
but just in case, they are available here.

dark grey skies and a storm rolling in as i sign off here.

perfect paella

all you need is one of these weber bbq's and this recipe.
mind you we had this last night at a friends place and they did it on a gas bbq. either works as long as the paella pan is covered.
also this recipe says for 8 people but i find it works for 10 - 12 easily.

a great dish for a crowd ...just add salad, wine and laughter.
maybe we could make for our new friends post performance in sao paulo?

adalgisa campos

i have to say
i'm not sure i'm at all intrigued by any of them

but i would like to see this performance
by adalgisa campos
at estudio risco in sao paulo
(what a great looking space - see their website)

Enrico David, "Bulbous Marauder" (2008)

Roger Hiorns, "Seizure" (2008)

Lucy Skaer, "Black Alphabet" (2008)

Richard Wright, "No Title" (2007)

these are the artists that have been shortlisted for this years Turner Prize.
any favourites?
i'm liking the harlequin painting and black alphabet sculpture myself.
i wonder who's going to get it...

you're still my favourite artist of all time!
