beautiful BC

we spent the most glorious day yesterday at the freshly renovated gambier.
this was the view from the deck as we left followed by even more beautiful BC
scenery on the boat ride home...absolutely magical.

do you have some savary sights to share? can you come up to gambier this weekend?

isn't is great that as i write this you are on your way over to grab me for some
noodles and thrifting?

so excited!

last night i had the pleasure of dining here. so many delicious things including a dish composed of octopus from BC and Japan, halibut tempura which was so light and fresh, melt in your mouth toro, a yummy scallop and radish salad and their signature tuna chili sashimi.

finishing our meal at the bar we chatted about shochu with the owner ken and his wife and concluded that 'dan' which means warmth filled us with exactly that.

i have been enjoying refreshing dog walks in the UBC woods
with the beautiful Sadie
and although she can't keep up the pace of her 9 year old son Charlie, it is still
hard to believe she is 15 years old.
isn't she lovely?

care for a walk in the woods sometime soon?
it may be the only cool place to hide out during the heat wave this week.

food coma

sahara of savary,
i have been here in vancouver for a week now and still dream of our lovely brunch together with your garden greens, and perfectly poached eggs on garlic tomato bread. delicious! and of course the best champagne and OJ ever enjoyed with your beautiful smile and baby.

i hope you are having a relaxing time on the white sands of savary. we missed you here the other night when paul made a fabulous pasta alla norma with eggplants from the farmers market.

come back soon and we can take in some of your vancouver to do's.
miss you very much

j bird

p.s.we did make it to a few drawing shows around town ,
and went to the VAG where there is some good stuff on right now.

what to do in vancouver when i'm not there - part 2

i believe at this exact moment you are probably winging your way
somewhere over northern california.

just thought i would fill you in on your plans for thursday night -
dinner in richmond
drunken crab?
all three?

followed by project rainbow's the ruby glass at the richmond art gallery:
the ruby glass, a study of the colour red, takes its name from werner herzog's 1976 film, herz aus glas in which herzog claimed to have hypnotized his actors in the filming of a pastoral village's obsession with red glass.

it's a little bit of honoré de balzac, maya deren, and yvonne rainer, mixed with a whole lotta jade boyd, jess birch, heidi nutley, and sydney vermont. i am confident it will be completely brilliant.

in a while

ps again -
how much do you love this picture of balzac?

what to do in vancouver when i'm not there - part 1

i'm happy that package arrived before you left!
(it was supposed to include a charming hand written note, but it got to the point where it had to be mailed or else...)

and now you will be here and i will be on the white sand beaches of savary
and since i know you will be totally lost in this one trick town without me
here's something for you to do saturday afternoon:

as part of the drawn festival
ann kipling will be giving a talk at the douglas udell gallery
saturday at noon

i love ann's work (john used to represent her).
committed to her practice for close to fifty years,
her landscapes are especially fine.

PS and the next time we're in paris...

lashes for 2009

look what i got yesterday!!!
how fabulous! thank you!

will be bringing the lashes up with me
so you can help me figure out how to put them on
and i can finally honor one of my new year's wishes.

love them. love adalgisa. love you.
see you soon.

venetian swan

have you seen our friend adalgisa's website?
lots of lovely work to see here.
an inspiring practice -
steady and measured.

made rhubarb sorbet the other day,
but i think it would have been much better in a popsicle mold
with a little something something extra
(vodka? gin?)

looking forward to seeing you soon

boozy popsicles

those babies are adorable! and mighty talented.
i'm inspired to take my rollerskates out for a spin today
on the crazy venice boardwalk
and slurp away at one of these campari and grapefruit popsicles.
(hotpants not included)

hope there are some of these in your savary stay.

happy feet

doll face,

i am about to fall asleep after having a peek at sea of shoes and happened upon their trip to japan.
too tired to take it all in but maybe tomorrow. there are some great photos!

and of course, she's got lots of lovely new shoes but these ones seemed
to grab my attention... i especially love the chanel bows.

night night + sweet shoe dreams to you.

the power of juice

went to a screening of this film last week here in LA as it was produced
by fellow vancouverite, the lovely stacey offman.
the message is simple: wellness and weight loss by juicing.
it follows director joe cross's personal 60 day challenge
but then interconnects with a fellow he meets on the road that weighs 430 lbs
that contacts him for help and then takes on a very serious and tough life turn around.
a very inspirational and emotional journey which makes one think anything is possible...
just take it one step at a time.

okay and drink juice.

summer's bounty

oh to spend my days surrounded by beautiful marbled papers and hand bound books!

happily, i should be living to a ripe old age what with all the lovely fresh produce i've been eating -
with our friend leah as inspiration, tammy has spearheaded our own mini co-op.
fresh local organic goodness each week, split between ten of us.
we order just what we need (ok, want) (and we can choose the lettuce from the little farmer in the fraser valley), and end up paying close to wholesale.
much better quality than the bigger organic box providers, it also circumvents the dilemma of finding a viable csa in the lower mainland.

(if anyone in vancouver is interested, let me know and i can send you the details)

happy sunshine!

paper too beautiful to use

great video and very reminiscent of our dear gray garden crazies.
did you see the remake ?
drew and jessica did quite a good job i must say.

was reading the nytimes yesterday and saw this article and immediately
thought of our small paper shop we may have to open in our golden years.
just to keep the creative juices flowing in between thrifting and sipping wine.

love those rings!

june gloom has left venice finally and it is a brilliant sunshine-y day!
