the geometry of pasta

my darling,
was ever so lovely hearing your voice today and i can't wait to see some of your new books from santa. maybe some lego sculptures to share as well?
was just looking at this online and thinking of some new ink drawings for 2011 in between bites of some of these pasta recipes. i am such a noodleholic no?
am dreaming of the amatriciana at the moment and wishing we were sitting around a long table on new year's eve eating paul's which i have to say is absolutely the best i have ever had.
miss you +
kissmas you
from the snowy ski slopes.
p.s. do you think the post office/customs confiscated the guanciale you sent?

wish list one

i have so many they are pretty much holding up the walls of my home, but there are always more:

who is sleeping on my pillow: mamma andersson / jockum nordström, documenting their joint exhibition at david zwirner in new york.

perfectly kept house is the sign of a misspent life: how to live creatively with collections, clutter, work, kids, pets, art, etc... and stop worrying about everything being perfectly in its place. i think i am mostly charmed because lately, my personal mantra has become something very similar to this title (and it includes inspiring pics of nathalie lete's studio and home...)

leslie williamson's book, handcrafted modern. just look at her blog. (just look at that sink!) even though my home seems to mostly be knee deep in lego and dress-up clothes, in my imagination i am closer to some of these homes.

ps those furry boots will ruin me, and let's not even start with the pink snake celine!

ringing in the holiday season

spotted this over here and must agree, i j'adore too.
the delicate rings and beautiful bag chic.
more things for my wish list.
can't believe christmas is almost here.

under the mistletoe with margiela

was in barneys the other day and stumbled upon these beauties.
needless to say, i would be quite happy in either version.
oh margiela why do you torment me so?
more from my wish list soon...

furry boots for you

seeing dear old bob + doug makes me pine for the great white north and a golden toque (or 5).
i know these are on your wish list and noticed they are on sale at OC just in case you do well with your xmas sales and deserve a little treat.
(btw you always deserve a little treat!)

and next trip up, i promise we will go thrifting and eat cheeseburgers in a parking lot...
or maybe you can come down here sooner and we can go to the rosebowl flea market then finish at in-n-out because seeing you is definitely on my wish list.

first day of christmas

i find the cartoon version somewhat horrifying, but sctv? gotta love it.
twelve days to go -
i have some things on my wish list to share with you in the next week or so.
but be forewarned, they do NOT include beer.
but possibly bacon.

wary meyers

i want to go thrifting. i want to pile in the car, and drive way out, and eat a cheeseburger in a parking lot and hit the mother lode. do you ever look at wary meyers?
that's what i'm talking about. but estate sales in long island aren't quite the same as thrift stores in burnaby...

ps and loving that california air in kahlil's films. so good!

winter wonderland

doll face,
more shots from my yosemite trip in all it's winter glory... 2nd photo from a great hike we did around mirror lake.
thanks for the tip regarding the japanese prints. i will make a plan to get out to the norton simon ( great museum where we went for jb's birthday) and report back.
the picasso museum exhibit looked if only i was a roller bearing heiress to get us over to europe when needed for art, food + frivolity.
i know you've been busy and just wanted to say your new note cards and poster at your shop are gorgeous.
good luck with your upcoming gift shows...wish i could be up there helping you out.
sending love from the land of sunshine,
your girl friday

japanese prints

there are three japanese woodblock exhibitions happening in your general vicinity right now (the most general kind of general), the most interesting probably being in pasadena at the norton simon museum, and featuring among other things utagawa hiroshige's thirty-six views of mount fuji (or mount jow, as it is now better known) (and different from hokusai's).

but if you can you should probably get down to the san diego museum of art to see an exhibition that includes work from cora timken burnett's collection:

cora timken burnett was a roller bearing heiress and self-financed sculptor who collected asian art and paranoid ideation. in the 1920s she married a boy-toy who also happened to be a dr. frankenstein. osteopath and scientist dr. john clawson burnett believed he might cure all ills with electromagnetism. cora’s wealth bought him a suitably electrified laboratory in the new jersey palisades. it was part of the couple’s 50-acre compound, featuring a green-tiled house designed by cora, a swimming pool shaped like a coiled snake, and an art collection that featured a reconstructed indian temple. dr. and mrs. burnett were nuts about security (even compared to neighbors in celeb-ghetto alpine, nj). they had a barbed wire fence, a kennel of guard dogs, and and unfinished 200-foot-long fallout shelter, big enough to store their collection.
(william poundstone, quoted from here)

picasso's living room

j bird

el capitan?
i drop off the edge of the world for a while and you go all road trip on me...!
wish i could've seen it all in person. pretty nice.

instead i've been spending way too much time in front of my computer, talking to printers, choosing the perfect shade of green.
but i did look up long enough to find these guys. so brilliant! so finnish!
would love to have seen their installation, picasso's living room, for the ateneum museum in helsinki when the musee national picasso in paris was under renovation.

hope you ate a whole lotta bird.

el capitan

a snapshot of el capitan i took as we drove through yosemite yesterday in all it's winter wonderlandness.
absolutely magical and so breathtaking ...more photos in a minute.

a perfect sunday

do not disturb is right...
this is my idea of the perfect sunday late brunch curled up in bed with the mouse and maybe a little glass of red wine...makes me feel like i'm up at gambier.
may wander over to the hammer museum in a bit and see the eva hesse show + reminisce over her + you + our art school days.
happy sunday love.
hope there is some quiet time + something yummy in your day.

thai eggplants

have you ever come across these little gems on your shopping excursions?
they are thai eggplants and just slightly bigger than a golf ball.
i found them at my asian supermarket the other day and the entire pack cost me $1.35 and i will admit i bought them just based on how beautiful they looked and had no idea what i was going to do with them.
then last night i made a thai green curry with them and am presently eating a bowl of it for breakfast topped with a little raita. quite delicious.

it's dark grey here today and i suspect it will rain most of the weekend.
is it true? is there snow up there?

hope you find some moments of peace + relaxation over the weekend.

love you,

and yes, i did see jf & son article in the times
which once again confirms you don't miss a thing.

i had a dinner party on friday night and made malfatti and then hosted another on sunday night and made suzanne's beef brisket with horseradish cream and salsa verde. goodness all around.

it really was a country club kind o weekend.

jf & son

fabulous feathers!

i want to wear feathers everyday...

have you heard of jf & son? interesting article on them on cathy horyn's blog for the nytimes. she has an ongoing conversation with herself exploring fashion and design in this time of mass consumption and the internet, and how one can possibly remain contemporary, relevant, and inspired. these guys sound like they get it, with their vertical-horizontal concept.

ok. back to it.

love you,

feathers for you

once again i am amazed at the amount of patience it must of took to compose all those paper bits in that vimeo and so well done.

the monk showed me these gloves the other day and of course i j'adore and could see us sporting a pair while we scoured the racks at VV...they would keep all the germs off our delicate paws.
i then went to his website and discovered this fabulous purse.
kissing birds kissing away all the money in one's bank account.
i wish.

it is the most gorgeous day here...sunny + slightly crisp
wish you were part of it as i'm feeling like thriftin'.

crochet happy

darling ess,

thank you for my birthday presents...guanciale, a mountain and an architect.
what more does a girl need? absolutely nothing!
you really do spoil me.

i spent my special day eating handpulled noodles in the park then wandering around through all the new art galleries that now dot the lower east side and chinatown.
came across these 2 bicycles at some point and was very curious as to whom would take the time to wrap these in crochet only to discover this at the next gallery i went into.
i am simply amazed at the amount of patience people have.

it was so great to be back in nyc if only for a ny minute...

love you,

Wednesday, November 3, 2010

it's your birthday...

...and i bought you a chunk of meat.

guanciale actually, for your pasta all'amatriciana.
we'll see how usps likes it.
then i decided it isn't enough, so i bought you a mountain. a little hilltop in japan called mt fuji or something. we'll have to change the name, probably to mt jow (no pun intended).
you can build a modernist castle at the top, but you'll need an architect, so guess what? i bought you one of those too!
he looks like a cross between george clooney and one of those j crew model guys. i don't know if he's capable of building you anything, but he looks good.

love you lots,
sally ann.

jeana sohn

lady j,

just wasted some time ogling the stylish closet peeks on jeana sohn's blog.
i need to replace everything.
medor watch?
vintage celine handbag?
antique embroidered dress?
i could probably at least try and MAKE a pompom headband.

fashion seems to be on the brain these days. good thing i have such a rich inner life...

and the hudson - how beautiful!
so love the fall colours everywhere.

Monday, November 1, 2010

a postcard from nyc

have landed in the east and woke up to this picture perfect view of the hudson this morning and the amazing colours of the turning leaves.
the sun is shining with a chill in the air as i get ready to hop on the subway and make my way into hand pulled noodle territory.

snake charmer

just spotted this snake cuff and thought of you...gorgeous.
it's available here for a wee bit of pocket change.

the sun is shining again here and the air is cool
making a perfect LA fall day.
wish we were at a farmer's market collecting goodies for a fabulous feast for tonight.
oh and speaking of feasts, i was treated to an early birthday dinner the other night...
the pasta tasting at osteria mozza complete with wine pairings...divine.

miss you.

marc jacobs dress

do you think a turban would work with the marc jacobs dress i am coveting at the moment?

Sunday, October 24, 2010

my other hat's a turban

it's the perfect winter topper, don't you think?
well, maybe not a WINTER hat, but i've made my decision and that's that. we all should embrace the turban this season. spring 2007 is a lifetime ago, the time is right and i'm bringing it back.

if only someone would post their old satiny prada turban to ebay, i'd be good to go...

Thursday, October 21, 2010

so the year was 1993. can this be right?
the year we met on the edge of the rain forest, with a mad sculptor who waxed rhapsodic about bill reid and a department head who was a compulsive painter of butterflies.

and in my mind those first years were all about this guy, who's been kind of out of the limelight the last few. certainly in this one monumental photo town. but i love him still, charlie parker reeboppers et al. and i will be finding a way to sneak out of the house to the cinematheque to catch this film, (yay tamra davis!) (most likely on the third, where i will be with you in spirit.)

ps thanks for the banquet love! make art!

banquet atelier

my darling sarah,
congratulations on your gorgeous new wares and wonderful new storefront.
very, very exciting indeed!
